Motherwell is about 30km away from Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) CBD. Motherwell was founded in the 1980s, to accommodate relocated black squatters and to cater for the influx of migrants to the city.

Motherwell is part of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan, which is a biggest metro in the Eastern Cape.
